I had a look at the new exhibitions in the StolenSpace gallery. I had to get indoors, the streets outside were full of men sounding off opinions about the latest election results.
Give Way is a series of metal works by Dan Rawlings, all road signs partially defaced or disintegrated, along with 2 larger pieces, based on a deteriorated traffic light, and an advertising display.
Consequences by Juan Miguel Palacios shows ruined scenes from what might be the warzones of Iraq or Syria. The image is disrupted either with breaks revealing further layers of imagery in the background, or rendering the surface of the picture rough and fragmentary, falling away from the canvas as the paintwork itself oozes streaks and blurs, distorting what could have been a photographic likeness.
